Keep It Simple or “KIS” was founded and created by Leon and Linda Hussey in 2002 after selling Classic Nursery and Landscape Co., retail nursery and landscape company that Leon and Linda owned for over 18 years.
KIS Farm began its planning in the summer of 2011 and officially opened its doors June 17th, 2012. Our vision was to be a one-stop shop for all things organic, relating to growing plants and raising animals. On our 7 acre property we have the following:
Farm/Feed Store – We are a farm and feed store with an emphasis on organics. We do our best to source as many of our products locally and carry feed for a variety of animals.
Organic Hydro Shop – We pride ourselves in our wide selection of hard-to-source organic soil amendments, which we have available in large bags and also by the lb. Our goal is to move people away from synthetic chemicals and pesticides and over to a more natural, sustainable way of growing. We believe in biological horticulture, essentially feeding the microbes which then cycle the nutrients for the plants. You can read a bit more about our philosophy at www.gardeningwithmicrobes.com
Specialty Nursery – We specialize in edible and medicinal plants that will do well in our area, including unique plants that you may not have heard of! We also have plants that add a functional element to your landscape such as nitrogen fixers or dynamic accumulators, are excellent pollinators for our native insects, birds, and bees.
Production Greenhouse/Garden – We have an 85′ x 30′ greenhouse that we grow vegetables and plant starts in, and have produce for sale when in-season. We also raise hens for egg production to sell at our farm store.
Education – We offer a wide variety of classes from local experts, including an outdoor preschool, horticulture for kids, kid yoga, soils and gardening classes, basic chicken keeping, bee keeping, horse nutrition, and much more!
In addition to the retail business, a nonprofit called Redmond Organization for Shared Environments (R.O.S.E.) was started by Leon and Linda and has won 2 prestigious Green Globe Awards.
It still operates doing environmental education with community members and children through a informational nature trail on the property in conjunction with the Lake Washington Environmental Adventure School, R.O.S.E., and Nature Vision.
Tad received his BA from the University of Washington in 2000 and his Masters from Macquarie University in Australia in 2005. Upon returning to the States, Tad took over running the online business and also the research and microscope testing for the company. In 2012, due to an interest in urban farming, chickens and indoor growing, Tad decided to take the business in a new direction which evolved into KIS Farm. During his free time, Tad also coaches a club volleyball team (www.moxiejuniors.com) and manages his own edible landscape in his front yard. He is passionate about organic horticulture and also runs a science-based horticulture forum with a couple of friends at www.logicalgardener.org
LEON R. HUSSEY
Leon Hussey has an Associate Degree in Horticulture and has been in the horticulture industry for over 35 years. He has owned and operated a retail nursery and design/build landscape and maintenance company in Redmond, Washington with his wife, Linda, which they sold in April of 2002.
Leon’s volunteer activities have included : member of the Regional Review Committee for final compost use guidelines from the West coast to the Mississippi, Advisory for the Woodinville Water District: for low water use/display garden, Advisor to City of Redmond working with the City Engineer on compost amendment standards for residential and commercial application, Advisor to Pomegranate: on Lake Sammamish stewardship program, and consultant for residences and schools for setting up native habitat gardens, a Soils for Salmon speaker and was a U.S. Delegate to China in Horticulture.
He is currently Vice President of Redmond Organization of Shared Environments (R.O.S.E.) , a Certified Native Plant Steward, on the Board of Directors for the Lake Washington Environmental and Adventure School, and a member of Water Tenders, a salmon-preservation group.
Leon has also received recognition for his stewardship on Bear Creek by being the recipient of two Green Globe Awards with King County for: Environmental Education and Wildlife Habitat Protection, Redmond Chamber of Commerce Education award and an education award from the Washington State Nursery and Landscape Association. He and Linda continue to manage the volunteer docents to lead tours along Bear Creek to teach environmental education and sustainable practices to children and adults.
Married for over 40 years with two sons, Leon enjoys spending his free time working in his garden, traveling and reading.
Linda Yoshitake Hussey, a long-time Redmond resident, graduated from Western Washington University with a bachelor’s degree in special education and a minor in psychology. She formerly taught primary special education for the mild to severely developmentally disabled with the Bellevue School District.
Linda owned and operated Classic Nursery & Landscape Co. in Redmond with her husband, Leon, for almost 20 years. Currently, she is involved with Keep It Simple (K.I.S.), which manufactures and sells compost tea brewers and organic soil amendments. She, her husband and son opened KIS Farm in 2012.
She is a certified mediator for the Dispute Resolution Center of Snohomish, Island and Skagit County, and continues to volunteer as a mediator in small claims courts. She is a graduate of the Leadership Institute program and an active community volunteer. She has served on the Business Tax Transportation Committee and the Economic Development Advisory committee for the City of Redmond, and is currently treasurer for Redmond Organization of Shared Environments. She served on the Redmond Chamber of Commerce board of directors for six years and has served on the Emerald Heights Board of Directors since 2000.
Linda has been married for over 40 years and has two grown sons. She enjoys their annual organic vegetable garden. In her spare time, she enjoys cooking, canning, yoga, gardening, reading, travel, walking/hiking, and her volunteer work.
